The Quick
D'Angelo Lovell Williams, Diedrick Brackens

The Quick publication is the compendium monograph, and supplemental site of collaboration, to the exhibition of the same title curated by Ashley Stull Meyers featuring the artwork of Diedrick Brackens and D’Angelo Lovell Williams. On view at the lumber room in 2022, The Quick facilitated conversation between Black creatives across distance on the subjects of queerness, Blackness, intimacy, familial bonds and little-cited domestic forms of co-working toward a craft. The book contains images of past work, family album photos and poetry from the two artists, a forward by the curator and epistolary contributions by Dr. Derrias Carter, Essence Harden, Kemi Adeyemi, Montinique McEachern and Salimatu Amabebe.

Polymode design process with the artists, curator, and gallery team was deeply collaborative. The book is set in a custom version of Polymode Sans, called Polymode Woven that expressed the raw and rich tradition of hand loom weaving that was a physical material in a number of works, but also served as a metaphor for the overlapping conversations and experiences of the artist and their families (chosen and biological). The display type is paired with Kepler designed by Robert Slimbach and Courier designed by Howard “Bud” Kettler both complementary typefaces speak to the familial and everyday correspondence in family ephemera.
